​The best educators don’t simply teach people how to do something.

 

They help people believe they’re capable of more than they thought possible.

 

When we think about education in our industry, it’s easy to focus on technical skills. They’re important, and they always will be. But over the years, I’ve come to realise they’re only one part of what great education can achieve.

 

Looking back over my own career, the educators who influenced me most weren’t necessarily the ones with the greatest technical ability.

 

They were the ones who challenged the way I thought.

 

They encouraged me to ask questions.

 

They believed in me before I fully believed in myself.

 

That changed far more than the way I worked. It changed the confidence I carried into every part of my career.

 

I think that’s something every educator should remember.

 

We don’t just teach techniques. We help shape the way people see themselves and what’s possible for their future.

 

That’s a responsibility I don’t think any of us should ever take lightly.

 

It’s also why I’ve come to believe that great education is about more than technical skill.

 

Technical ability might open the door.

 

Confidence gives people the courage to walk through it.

 

Judgement helps them make good decisions once they’re there.

 

To me, that’s what education has always been about.

 

Helping people become more capable.

 

More confident.

 

And more curious.

 

Years from now, people may not remember every technique they were taught.

 

But they’ll remember how an educator made them feel.

 

I think that's just as important.
